Control of Dogs

If permitted, dogs will behave in a way that we consider unacceptable.

Chasing livestock, killing cats, and becoming territorial are all natural behaviours. This does not mean that the dog is bad or that it is misbehaving, it simply means that you have given it the opportunity to act in the way they were designed (i.e. a wild canine predator). We cannot have it both ways; the dog is either a wild canine predator or a domesticated pet. Animal Services is about Community Safety.

Dog owners must remove dog droppings deposited in any public place.

Dog owners are encouraged to carry bags for this purpose and to use and dispose of these responsibly.

Obligation of Dog Owners

You must comply with the following obligations
Ensure that your dog
  • is registered
  • is kept under proper control at all times
  • receives proper care and attention and is supplied with proper andsufficient food, water and shelter
  • receives adequate exercise
Take all reasonable steps to ensure that your dog
  • does not create a nuisance by loud and persistent barking
  • does not injure, endanger, intimidate, or cause distress to any person
  • does not injure, endanger, or cause distress to any stock, poultry, domestic animal, or protected wildlife
  • does not damage or endanger any property belonging to any other person.

Impounding

“Impound” means - in a public pound or any vehicle used to transport dogs to a public pound.

Uncontrolled dogs will be impounded where appropriate.

Dogs impounded on more than three occasions within a continuous period of 24 months may be required to be neutered. The owner is required within one month to produce a veterinary certificate certifying that the neutering has been done.

Owners of dogs not being kept under proper control may be issued with infringement notices.
