What's Hot in Winter Fashion?

Well, that time of year has almost rolled around again. The leaves are falling from the trees, the days are getting colder and shorter, and the shops are flooded with all kinds of snugly jerseys and big coats. Yep, winter’s on its way. And with winter comes winter fashion!

Winter is the time of year that our fashion designers claim to prefer designing for. With winter fashion comes textures, colours (although too often these are just shades of black and grey and crème!), trims, and multiple layers of clothing. We are suddenly inundated with options of what to wear, and which fashion trends to follow. It can all get pretty confusing! So here’s my (brief) summary of what’s in store so far for winter, and a couple of trends to be very, very cautious of!!

GENERAL LOOKS:

Oriental:
The oriental look has made yet another come back. Think wrap around tops, satin fabrics, apple blossom prints, Chinese necklines, bright red, black, and yellow. This is quite a classic, simple trend to wear, and most oriental inspired designs can be easily worn with your favourite pair of jeans or skirt, making it easy to follow this trend by adding just one wrap top or Chinese neckline to your wardrobe. Most of the oriental inspired garments are quite light-weight though, so this trend is more suited to the autumn months than to the middle of winter.

Gothic:
It’s going to be a dark, dark winter. If you’re going with this trend, keep an eye out for black clothes, tight fitting tops, black lace, long flowing skirts, and plenty of dark eye make up and nail polish. Silver jewellery is a great way to accessorise this trend, especially the classic silver cross necklace and plenty of silver rings. You can get dressed up in all those long, flowing clothes, and swish your way dramatically around town.

Military:
The military look is still around, despite it having been in our wardrobes for a few years now. And it’s still a good, comfortable option. Combat and cargo pants tend to be very comfortable, and those pockets come in very handy, especially if you’re not a fan of carrying around a bag all the time. (Just make sure your cargo pants are reasonably wide in the leg – tight cargo pants are a misuse of this trend). Shades of dull green, white, black, and grey marle are still scattered around all the shops. Wide mesh tops (both singlet tops and wrap tops) have made an appearance at Glassons once more. Epaulets are popping up on jackets and jerseys, and wide rib jerseys are all over the place.

PARTICULAR GARMENTS:

Bomber jackets:
Bomber jackets are short (usually around waist-length), square jackets. They are quite a casual jacket option, and go well with your favourite pair of jeans. A classic style, they are always around, but have been pushed closer to the forefront of the fashion trends for this winter.

Mini skirts:
Ironically, mini skirts are yet again attempting to make a comeback this winter. I have no idea why designers have decided to try to dress us all in ultra-short skirts for the coldest part of the year, it doesn’t seem to make all that much sense really. But if you’re not going to be outside for long periods of time, and you have some good warm boots and a jersey, now is the time to indulge in showing off your legs. Just make sure that your skirt is in a reasonably heavy weight fabric, like wool or denim.

Ugg boots:
Ugg boots have been slowly making there way into trying to be a fashion staple for this winter. They are being produced in different ways – they are now turning up in longer lengths (mid-calf to knee-high), with cross over straps or laces often winding their way up the length of the boot. Fringing and fur trim are also getting into the action, and shades of tan, chocolate, and black are all over the place. If done right, ugg boots can be a very good choice for wearing with winter skirts (they don’t sit very well under trousers unfortunately). They’re warm and snugly and comfortable. Kind of like your favourite old jersey, only as a shoe.
