Boon for teachers and students
Tauranga residents will have the chance to learn about a quiet revolution that has been taking place in schools around the world in recent years on January 2, at public seminar at Macy’s Conference Centre. It is called Consciousness Based Education.
Tauranga Transcendental Meditation centre instructors Stephen Benner and Faye McLaren are involved in a Consciousness Based Education project in NZ and say it brings about profound change in the institutions where it is introduced.
Some of the changes experienced include:
Major declines in violence, bullying and vandalism,
Substantial improvements in academic results,
Reduction in need for suspensions and detentions,
Major reduction in absenteeism,
Teachers and students eager to get to school, and
The gaining of a lifetime skill for individuals to lead a productive, happy life.
Consciousness Based Education involves the use of the Transcendental Meditation programme for both students and staff during periods of ‘quiet time’ – about 15 minutes at the start and end of each school day. The TM technique has been established by scientific research over the past forty years to be the most effective method for reducing trait anxiety, a measure of chronic stress.
Information on this non-sectarian, easy-to-learn programme is available at
www.stressfreeschools.co.nzand video downloads featuring TV news reports on the results overseas are available by clicking on ‘overview videos’.
In New Zealand this programme has now been accepted at both a secondary school and a primary school in the top half of the North Island. It is planned to commence the programme for students early in 2009, and in the meantime, instruction of the staff has begun at both schools.
Stephen and Faye are involved in one of these projects and will be speaking about it at the public seminar which starts at 7.30pm Friday January 2 at Macy’s Conference Centre, corner 11th Avenue and Edgecumbe Rd, Tauranga.
