The New Zealand school year is divided into four terms for primary, intermediate and secondary schools.
Students have a six-week summer holiday break and three
two-week breaks between each of the four terms. Most schools follow the same term dates,
but there is limited flexibility for schools to work around local
events. During term-time, schools will also close for statutory
holidays, teacher-only days and regional anniversary days.
The terms:
- Term 1 Early February until mid-April
- Term 2 Late April until the beginning of July
- Term 3 Mid-July until late September
- Term 4 Mid-October until mid-December
The exact dates change from year to year.
During the school day, there will be intervals in the morning and
afternoon and at lunchtime to enable your child to have something to
eat and to play. In New Zealand the responsibility is on parents to
provide lunches and morning and afternoon tea.
