Waihi Beach is a popular holiday destination thanks to nine kilometres of sandy white beach and a quiet lifestyle.
Waihi Beach is located at the western boundary of the region. From the northern end of Waihi Beach you can access the beautiful Orokawa Walkway.
This eight kilometre walkway offers fantastic views and winds along the
coastline to Orokawa Bay and further up to Homunga Bay, which are both
secluded beaches that are great spots for a picnic.
The township of Waihi Beach itself has a number of accommodation options and there’s a daily bus service between Tauranga and Waihi Beach. The main street in Waihi Beach includes cafés and takeaways suitable for a day at the beach.
Nestled
down the road from Waihi Beach is Athenree, a tranquil harbourside
haven. Next stop is Bowentown, a popular spot for family picnics,
fishing and swimming. Bowentown Domain, located on the headland at the
northern entrance to Tauranga Harbour, offers a series of walks which
take in culturally significant sites such as Maori pa that date back
several hundred years.
